Our Week at a Glance
4/7/18-4/11/18
I hope you all enjoyed the sun this weekend! What beautiful weather. As always, please have your kiddo dress for the weather. I always recommend a jacket just in case the weather goes south.
We have swimming all week. Please remember to have your child pack a swimsuit, towel, dry bag and goggles (optional). Girls will need a hair tie. Because we have swimming all week, I am not going to send home book baggies. I would much rather have the kiddos get a good night’s rest and be well prepared for the following day. Between swimming, our research projects and starting a new unit in math…the kiddos are going to be tired by the end of the day. At this point in the year, it is more important they are getting enough sleep! Thank you for your help with this! I would still like to encourage each student to keep reading at home. They can choose a fun book from home or read their library books! J Book baggies will start up, again, next week.

Our Week at a Glance
1/29/18-2/2/18
I would like to thank all of you who joined us for a fun day in the Park, last week! What a fun day! I will share pictures with all of you via email. Here’s to another fun week of first grade! It’s hard to believe that February 12th is the 100th day of school! Please start thinking of 100 small items that your child can bring to school on (or before) this day. The items need to be the same object and should fit in a small sack. Examples: 100 paper clips, 100 chocolate chips, 100 rubber bands, 100 cheerios, 100 Legos, etc. Have your kiddo count out the 100 items (we have been counting by tens and fives in class so this might be one way for them to organize their counts), put them in a small, opaque sack, and brainstorm 3 clues to help us guess what the items are. Have fun with this and try to stump us! J We will also be dressing up like we are 100 years old! This will be a fun activity to help us compare and contrast.
LOOKING AHEAD…. We will have our Valentine’s Day party on Wednesday, February 14th from 11:15-12:15! You are all invited…the more the merrier! In case your child would like to get a head start on their Valentines, I have attached a list of ALL student names. If you would like to volunteer to bring in fresh fruits, vegetables, cheese and crackers, drinks, etc. for our Valentine’s Day party, please let me or Amber Chapman know! You can email her at aljones31@yahoo.com. THANK YOU in advance!

We had a great start to first grade, last week! I am enjoying getting to know each of your kiddos. They seem like a really sweet group! We have 16 students in our class and we are lucky to have Ms. Kelle with us (for 30min) during our morning literacy block. September 5, 2017
Dear Families,
Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year! I am looking forward to working with your children and building a strong relationship with each of you. We are very lucky to have Kelle Morris working in our class as a literacy para; she will be with our class every morning for about 30 minutes. This week we will be doing many community-building activities focusing on our names.
Reading will be the focus throughout the year. The classroom will be a language rich environment in which the students can learn. For literacy, we will be using a Lucy Calkins reading and writing program along with our district reading standards and a spelling program called Words Their Way (more information to come)! For handwriting we will use Handwriting Without Tears, which you may remember from Kindergarten. We will also be using the Engage New York math program. This approach to math supports students in developing the ability to understand and explain their use of procedures when problem solving.
We will discuss math and reading homework further on back to school night on September 14th from 6-7pm.
This year we are fortunate to be part of the fresh fruit and veggies program again. Each day your child will have the opportunity to have a fresh snack provided with grant money. However, if your child would like to bring their own snack, they are welcome to do so. Our snack time will be in the afternoon, this year, due to lunch being on the early side (10:45am).
We will be participating in the school-wide Positive Behavior System. Students will clearly know the expectations: be safe, be respectful, be responsible, and be friendly. Great behavior will be rewarded with special "gotchya tickets” (similar to bee tickets).
Please feel free to contact me anytime with question or concerns. You can reach me by email eleeds@tcsd.org or phone 733-9651.. Check out our classroom web page at www.msleeds.weebly.com
Sincerely,
Ellery Leeds
P.S. To make all of our lives easier, please try to have your kiddos keep valuable items and toys at home. Thanks in advance for your help!
Estimadas familias:
